EXAMPLES OF STIGMA RELATED TO MENTAL/PHYSICAL HEALTH ISSUES?

Isaias Badgley: Mental Health Issues: My son has autism and the kids at school and even some of our family members don't know how to take him. They think he's weird and because of that he does not fit in. He has a huge stigma in society. He thinks every person in the world does not like him. He only wants to be home because he says his dad, sister and me are the only people who love him. Physical Health Issues: It has been my experience that most people with physical disabilities make the general population uncomfortable because they are ignorant to their situations. It's the same thing with nursing homes. I used to work in a nursing home and I noticed a good deal of visitors were very uncomfortable. The story is the same in many walks of life. If a person is ignorant to a disability, a race, a culture, etc. they have fear of the unknown. The shame of it is that people have to suffer because of other people's ignorance.Stigma: I think a stigma is a mark placed! on someone for a multitude of attributes. A mark of being different than the "norm" of their society. A person with multiple piercings and pink hair will feel a stigma in our society. However, some people embrace their stigma because they are so angry at society they want to be as against the norm as possible. My guess is they feel more in control when they control their level of inclusion on their terms. Good luck on your project....Show more

Toshia Metzker: Some mental health links you might find useful: http://www.nami.org/template.cfm?Section=Fight_Sti...http://bipolar.about.com/u/ua/stigma/stigma.htmhttp://www.nmha.org/index.cfm?objectid=C7DF985A-13...This one had lots of useful facts:http://www.pendulum.org/articles/articles_dmn_misw...Here's a whole book about stigma in healthcare - some of it free online: http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=r48CnP7lqvoC&pg...I'd describe stigma as social marginalisation.By the way, an example on here is a questionner menti! oning she's blind and then answerers telling her that she can'! t be legit. Apparently blind people don't use the internet. I'm also blind and got told by a bicyclist who nearly run me over only to cross roads at crossings - which would mean I'd have to stay home. I guess the first piece of stigma came from ignorance, but the second? I imagine some view the world as a rat race and will just take any advantage they can get.Good luck with your essay....Show more

Corrinne Ruozzo: A lady was telling me about her experience in a minor surgery. I forget what kind. Anyways the surgeon didn't give her the local anesthetic, because in his words "Her kind do not feel pain." or something close to that. We were in the mental wing of the hospital at the time she told me this.
