Will rails ruin my snowboard?

Jill Thomer: Rails do more damage to edges than they do to the base. A base can be repaired. An edge can only be filed and resharpened so many times. An occasional rail won't do any noticeable damage while riding though. If you're still worried, you can stick to boxes. A box has a plastic surface that you slide on. This won't do any damage to your base. On a side note, whonever gave you that info regarding resort rails vs. urban rails probably shouldn't be giving advice. That person is wrong....Show more

Mark Villifana: An occasional rail here and there probably won't do much, but if you start getting heavily into it, you should be ready for board damage, it's inevitable when you're a park rat, be it a core shot, de lamming a board, or snapping the board in half. The first two can be fixed with PTEX and Epoxy and you'll still be able to ride the board but if you snap a board, you're pretty much screwed. If you're serious about getting into rails, the best thing! to do is to get a cheap park board that you can use when you want to do rails, you're probably going to want a softer board for rails anyway, and it will probably be too soft for going BIG on jumps.... keep it tucked away until you want to start hitting rails and when you ride it, don't worry about damaging it. Save your good board for jumps and the steeps...Show more
