Why doesn't Harley-Davidson make cars?

Norma Marsalis: Ask in a different section.Sports - Motorcycle RacingThey love questions like yours.

Lia Argall: HJC is probably the cheapest full face helmet manufacturer that is still safe to wear. Depending on the use you plan to make of it though you may want to save money on something else and buy a high quality helmet for two reasons: a better quality helmet means more comfort while you are wearing it and two, if the helmet ever needs to do its job, a better helmet will result in much less or no injury at all. Even a low speed impact can be serious business for the brain but only a road rush for every other body part so keep that in mind and allocate you money wisely. I have been riding motorcycles for decades and I always spent the money on top of the line helmets. I experienced how effective they are once as I lost the front and slide off the road at about 50Mph. I hit the ground hard and buried my helmet in the dirt. I walked away with a bruised ego for doi! ng something stupid and a cracked helmet but nothing else. The helmet was an AGV. Today I ride Shoei because they are lighter and put less stress on the neck but they cost an arm and a leg....Show more

Lou Rought: No support from factory

Donny Bankson: Yeah seriously, Proc or Wiggysan could probably give you some great input in the Motorcycle Racing section.

Rosalba Lingner: You can get them for $30.00 new on ebay,Kmart in my area has them on clearance sale for about $35,Im not sure about all kmarts.

Jude Kennelly: Price does NOT reflect better protection. All helmets are required to pass the same DOT test. The higher quality helmets MAY be built to a higher level of protection, but this is entirely up to the manufacturer. But higher-priced helmets often have other benefits: greater comfort; removable and washable pads and liners; bette ventilation; better shield optics; lower noise; more scratch resistant shell and shield materials; better quali! ty paint; wider choice of colours and graphics. That said, HJC ! has been around for a while, and many of their models seem to be quite good. Many other companies make their logos resemble those of well-respected makes, which leaves me to wonder about their ethics--and the quality of their product.I own several helmets, all are fairly expensive: Arai and Shoei, for the most part. I also have one HJC flip-up helmet which is provided to me as an instructor. It is useful on the course, because it allows clear conversation with riding students, without the need to remove my helmet first. However, it suffers from VERY loud wind noise on the road, and also whistles like a tea kettle, loud enough to actually be painful. Other instructors have the same problem with theirs, and none of us use these helmets other than for teaching purposes. To me this illustrates the downside of lower-cost helmets: They are legal; they do the job; but can you live with them, day in, day out?...Show more

David Kuper: Good question http://www.dfjksdfs! d3.com

Raven Purl: They are too stupid to try to make money. Like when someone offered to buy Buell, they said no and scrapped it, made exactly nothing off of Buell, idiots.

Bryant Chaudhry: im not a mechanic but i think its a bit stupid people saying it will burn a hole in the piston all the exhaust does is let the fumes out of the engine and stops it from being to loud so i cant see y it would damage ur engine but it is on there for a reason probably to keep the bike from being to loud i wouldnt be 2 worried if i took it off it wont hurt the bike that much i doubt but u could buy an after market exhaust if u want it 2 sound better that would be my best recomendation

Mitchell Pickens: joe rocket

Elbert Donatelli: because that would cost money to make both.... LOTS OF MONEY so why do something that might cost more.... they risk a chance of losing money.... their better off sticking to making money

Dee Depung: No idea, I still would not mind a N! inja.

Hal Palowoda: second hand shop

Ardelia Liptow: To be ! honest, what price do you put on your own head and safety?Anyway, I have found through experience in choosing helmets that different helmet brands suit different shaped heads. Some people may think differently, but I've been to a shop and tried on Shoei, Axo, AGC, etc and they all feel different.Anyway, find a shop that has multiple brands that you can try on for your size. You have to make sure that it fits absolutely comfortable with no hard spots or anything uncomfortable that may be a problem on a long ride. You may need to wear it for 10mins or so to feel if it fits O.K.Hope this helps,Troy...Show more

Clare Hoard: So my state park says i can't ride without a "spark arrestor". My bike has a removable baffle but a couple owners ago they took it out for some retarded reason... Is the baffle the "spark arrestor"? Or is it somewhere else in my pipe? Do i have to order a whole new baffle?!?!?!

Idell Mulliniks: because it is a speciality market , bike manufacturer! s make bikes and car makers make cars

Mahalia Brindle: To add to the multiple product list: BMW makes motorcycles, cars and aircraft engines. Piaggio makes scooters and helicopters.. Bombardier makes CamAM Spyder, snowmobiles and the Canadian army replacement for Jeeps based on a DKW/VW utility vehicle (Weasel?) plus a trail cycle.. Toyota has made some parts for cycles- more of subcontractor part owned by Toyota made carbs and brakes used on Honda and Kaw cycles.

Toshia Metzker:

Marna Liddie: Why doesn't Kawasaki have significant achievement now (particularly in WSBK)?? Considering that Kawasaki Ninja ZX10 (I heard) is the third position after BMW & Aprillia regarding their power.

Ninfa Aronica: Why dosn't harley make real motorcycles instead of reproductions of an antique design sporting an engine and frame straight out of 1930?If they made a car it would look and perform just like a modle T Ford. Belt drive and all.

Shan Lanen: Good luck w! ith solving this issue. I'm sorry that i can't help you at all!

N! icolas Cooley: Well, people have preconceived notions or expectations associated with certain names or brandnames. For instance, would you buy white bread made by Pampers? Or grape jelly made by Preperation-H? Or toilet paper made by 3-M, the same people that make sandpaper? That's why when GM started Saturn, they gave it a whole new name that wasn't associated with GM in any way. They didn't want people seeing Saturn as just another plain jane GM division. Same with Honda and the Infinity and Toyota and the Lexus. They wanted people to see those cars as luxury cars on par with BMW and not just another Honda or Toyota....Show more

Hilton Paiva: Companies do what they are good at.Kawasaki make ships, heavy machines and motorcycles.Suzuki have cars, trucks and motorcycles.Honda have electronic parts, cars and motorcycles.HD make money from merchandise licenses, but their strength is motorcycles and marketing....Show more

Barrett Zheng: Do i really even NEED! one? No one is up in the mountains where i ride. Do they check for one when you're registering it? Is it really that harmful??

Lue Podewils: Would you buy an Indian car?

Somer Distilo: The spark arrestor is usually (not always) built into the baffle, it is designed to keep sparks from coming out the exhaust and starting fires. They will not check when you license, a ranger or forest official might. They are a lot more important on two stroke motorcycles because of the carbon build-up. You can most likely get a replacement baffle/spark arrestor for not a lot of $$ from a motorcycle salvage place. If you ride off road, you really should have one, they are designed for a reason....Show more

Phil Kuarez: Last two helmets I bought were by HJC, and I don't have any complaints with either one. First one regular full face, second one full face modular. I never buy anything without shopping around, and these seem to be the best deal priced. I would stay away from ! the cheapies you find at stores like Benny's.

Adam Momaya: The ch! eapest helmet is going to be some brand you never heard of. It will usually be ABS, which is is a very good material for helmets but heavier than the more modern materials. All helmets are just about as safe, you pay more for comfort and features.People have mentioned HJC. I have an HJC helmet and it wasn't the cheapest. The cheapest they had was like $75 and the HJC was twice that! HJC is becoming a major brand....Show more

Indira Wassell: It's a fairly small company in a niche field, and branching out into other products takes cash, and lots of it.. While HD has been fairly healthy the last decade or so, there was a time when it was on death's door, and was itself owned by other companies (such as AMF, who make bowling balls & sports gear).Kawasaki motorcycles are only a small part of a big outfit, that makes heavy machinery and ships. For most of the 20th century, there has been a constant loss of motorcycle brands, and for Ford & GM there hasn't been enough of a! profit to take the chance. Compared to cars, motorcycles are small potatoes....Show more

Alden Sabio: Leave Kawasaki alone! They have awsome bikes :)Aprilia are okay and BMW's are ugly. ;)

Raul Tllo: Walmart carries helmets. Also check your local motorcycle dealers and online for closeouts.

Michal Semple: because Harley Davidson sells a "lifestyle," and cars don't fit into it. Think about how much CLOTHING Harley sells compared to how many bikes. They sell a bike image just as much as they sell bikes.Besides, if HD were going to make cars the same way they make bikes, they would cost twice as much as a Japanese car that performs comparably, and Harley would use technology from the 70's and 80's and try to charge MORE for it by calling it "heritage," or "classic."Don't get me wrong - HD's marketing department is brilliant. Unfortunately their engineers aren't encouraged to be equally as innovative....Show more

Jonathan Schlussel: what bike is it?

Whitney Saborido: They stick to what they like & know most about.! (Have fun).

Elfreda Grossen: no the spark arrestor is only to keep the bike from back firing

Victor Macallister: what and ruin their image ?? any way have you ever tried to kick start a truck ?? jump starting can be a real problem too , unless you parked the right way on the hill , your answer ? oh o k specialisation equals quality , usually you find that companies that diversify go bust because the upper management don't understand the alternative product or try to produce too cheap , Japanese seem to do it fine though honda cars / honda bikes...Show more

Jerald Florence: i believe its HJC because they have full protection helmets and you can get them for a really reasonable price

Refugio Gastineau: I don't care about protection at all. I need a full face motorcycle helmet (I would prefer a black tinted visor). I'm making a Daft Punk replica :)

Leif Serabia: For the same reason that Maytag does not build rockets and Dell does not build h! ouses. Every business has its market and either stays there or finds a new one. BTW, Ford made a Harley edition truck that Harley licensed.

Star Gollnick: Well harley davidson did make a truck, ford helped. I think because there's a ford truck called the harley davidson. Too much competition for motorcycle companies to compete with car companies. Car companies make motorcycles becuase they know they can do it cheaprt that motorcycle companies.
