Kirk Coolbeth: Boston has a tremendous public transportation service. I have not had a car in my 51 years and I have had no problem relying on the MBTA and so do thousands of others. Be advised that a minor drag is that it does not go all night like NYC!! No such thing as leaving a club at 3:30 A.M. and taking a train home-nope, you'll need a taxi. All the places you mention are fine for bus and/or train. No commute should take you more than 2 hours and most considerably less.A lot of trendy people live in Jamaica Plain-can I still say that it is a hip place? Gus Leiby: Jamaica Plain is far better than many parts of the city--it has an eclectic mix of people and is still not quite as pricey as the South End. Public transportation pretty much renders a car superfluous (handy for weekend getaways from the city, though). It's family-f! riendly, eco-friendly with a range of activities and a dynamite farmer's market in the Bank of America parking lot.
